Saturn threw a comet out of the solar system forever

Discovery: Astronomers discovered that Saturn ejected a comet, designated as Comet A117uUD, out of our solar system. The Comet A117uUD was discovered on June 14, 2024, by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS).

Encounter: This event occurred after a significant encounter between the comet and Saturn in 2022.

Gravitational Interaction: The gravitational interaction with Saturn altered the comet’s trajectory.

Ejection: As a result of this interaction, the comet was sent on a path that will take it into interstellar space.

This interaction altered the comet’s trajectory, placing it on a highly elliptical orbit that will eject it into interstellar space at a speed of approximately 10,800 kmph, which is about four and a half times the top speed of an F-16 jet fighter.

This marks only the second time a comet has been observed being flung out of the solar system due to a planetary encounter. The first instance was Comet C/1980 E1 (Bowell), which was ejected by Jupiter in 1980.

Exploration: The Cassini spacecraft, which orbited Saturn from 2004 to 2017, provided a wealth of information about the planet, its rings, and its moons.
