Update on Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA)

The term “maternal mortality” refers to a woman dying while pregnant or within 42 days after having given birth.

Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) is defined as the number of maternal deaths during a given time per 1,00,000 live births during the same time.

The Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) is an ongoing initiative by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India, aimed at providing comprehensive and quality antenatal care to all pregnant women on the 9th of every month.

Extended PMSMA strategy launched to ensure quality Antenatal care to pregnant women for individual tracking of high-risk pregnancy and provision of additional PMSMA sessions.

The list of High-Risk Pregnancy expanded from 10 categories to 25 categories to ensure early identification and timely management to reduce morbidity & mortality.

Objective:

To ensure at least one antenatal checkup for all pregnant women in their second or third trimester by a physician or specialist.

Top Performing States: Volunteers Registered: Maharashtra (1,065), Uttar Pradesh (1,016), Rajasthan (981), Madhya Pradesh (880), Karnataka (571).

Antenatal Care: Uttar Pradesh (169,141), Bihar (34,815), Andhra Pradesh (27,659), Madhya Pradesh (27,642), West Bengal (21,233).

Engagement with Private Sector: The program encourages private practitioners to volunteer and participate in providing antenatal care at government health facilities.

Strategies have been devel oped to generate awareness and appeal to the private sector for participation.
